Well Dweller Beginner Tips: 10 Things to Know First

Well Dweller is approachable, but a few habits make the first hours much smoother. These come from the developer’s own notes, the official store text and what early players ran into on the Steam forum.

1. Turn on the minimap

It is off by default. Pause, open Options → Gameplay → Minimap and switch it on. It sits in the bottom-right and shows the exits of the room you are in, which cuts down on trips to the full map.

2. Buy Glass Eye and Weathered Coin first

Once you meet Looter in the Hunter’s Cabin his shop appears in every save tent. Glass Eye (450) makes hidden passages visible and Weathered Coin (600) makes enemies drop more currency. Both early-game guides we checked put these two first, and the extra currency pays for everything else. See the full Looter’s shop list.

3. Healing is aimed

You heal by throwing the Oil Vial and catching the timing, not by holding a button. The developer added a little extra timing to it during the demo, and the first trinket you find, Hunter’s Locket, widens the window further. Practise before the Groundskeeper, which arrives almost immediately after you learn it.

4. Difficulty changes patterns, not damage

Easy, Normal and Hard change how bosses attack — projectile counts, speed, reaction time — but enemies hit just as hard on every setting. If a fight is not fun, drop the preset or turn on an assist; you can change both from the gameplay menu at any time. More on the difficulty page.

5. Bubbles push you away from where you stand

The direction a bubble launches you depends on your position relative to it, not on the stick. If you keep flying the wrong way, reposition before you touch it.

6. Mark everything you can’t reach

Open the map and add a marker (Y on Xbox) on any locked door, out-of-reach pickup or time trial. After each new ability, sweep your markers. If you are truly stuck, the save tent sells map locations that reveal the next objective.

7. Get Tent Travel early

Beating The Swarm in The Bog gives you Climb and Tent Travel at once. From then on any save tent is a fast-travel point, which makes backtracking cheap.

8. You respawn at the last tent

Dying sends you back to the tent you last rested at, not to the boss door. Rest before any fight and before long time trials.

9. Return spirits as you go

Spirits freed from stone statues are returned in the Night Garden. Returning 2, 12 and 20 of them gives trinkets, and other returns give currency or trinket slots. All 20 locations are on the collectibles page.

10. Nothing is missable

Every collectible can be picked up before or after the final boss. There is no point of no return, so follow the story first and clean up later with the 100% checklist.
